Project Details
The DoveLewis Emergency and ICU animal hospital is the only 24-hour non-profit emergency animal hospital in the Pacific Northwest. The two-story, 20,000 SF building on a .75-acre site is located in downtown Portland. The facility includes eight exam rooms; an emergency room; a sterile core of rooms including two surgery suites and a recovery area; an intensive care unit with separate wards for cats and dogs; a blood bank; X-ray and radiology services; space for care of lost pets, stray animals, and wildlife; a reception and waiting room; and a grieving area with adjacent serenity garden.
Design challenges included fitting all program needs into the tight constraints of the site and building as well as providing adequate sound and smell isolation. The animal wards and exam rooms feature full height walls with acoustic insulation. Gasket style doors aid in sound and odor control, while a mechanical air exchange rated at 14 air changes per hour helps isolate odors.
